North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research
The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR), Pasighat (Erstwhile North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine) is an autonomous National Institute under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. The Institute is located in the Pasighat, in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Union Cabinet accorded approval for establishment of the Institute on 21st February, 2008 on the recommendations of the Steering Committee of the Planning Commission on AYUSH for the 11th Plan. The Institute was established with the goal to strengthen and develop traditional healthcare practices for the benefit of the nation, with special focus on North Eastern region. Then it was named as North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine (NEIFM). During August, 2021 the Union Cabinet accorded approval to expand the mandate of the Institute and incorporated Ayurveda academic courses. With this, the nomenclature of the Institute was changed to The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research. The Institute intends to document and assess Local Health Traditions, Healing Knowledge, Drugs Therapeutic product development based on Traditional knowledge, protection of Traditional Knowledge through IPR regime, support conservation and sustainable use of Traditional Practices, Biodiversity, etc. The Institute will also provide Undergraduate courses and quality patient care service under the Ayurvedic system of medicines. The Institute has been registered as Society with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
NEIAFMR is spread over an area of 40 acres and located in the heart of the smart city, Pasighat. An area of 16 acres has been utilized in phase- I for the construction of Administrative buildings, Guest house, and Thematic medicinal garden. Currently, the Institute has OPDs in Ayurvedic health care and Traditional healing system. The Institute is also having a 50 bedded IPD hospital which is being upgraded to 60 bedded. The Research unit has well equipped laboratorial infrastructure and a library. There are laboratories for Life Sciences, Folk Medicine, Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, Herbarium Museum, etc. The Institute has a Thematic Medicinal Plant Garden with an Aquatic Pond, Orchidarium and Vermicompost tank, spread over an area of 5 he.
NEIAFMR will shortly introduce undergraduate courses in Ayurveda with an initial intake capacity of 30 students. It will also start a 60 bedded Hospital with patient care services in Ayurveda and Modern medicine system. A new infrastructural development and manpower recruitment is being initiate to accommodate the new facilities in the Institute.
